Pioneering Timber Construction in Canada

Timber Columns for Residential Project in Toronto

With “1925 Victoria Park”, a flagship project for sustainable and affordable construction is being developed in Toronto. Commissioned by the Serotiny Group, Brüninghoff is responsible for manufacturing columns made of glued laminated timber (GLT) and BauBuche (a high-strength beech laminated veneer lumber, LVL), while simultaneously contributing to knowledge transfer in the field of modern timber construction. The scope of services also includes the delivery of GLT beams, which are used as ribs in timber–concrete composite floor slabs.

The residential project “1925 Victoria Park” in Toronto marks a milestone for sustainable construction in Canada. As the first building in North America to be realized according to the CREE Buildings approach, it combines innovative timber construction with the highest energy-efficiency standards. Brüninghoff is supplying 1,747 timber columns made of spruce and BauBuche, the latter selected for its high load-bearing capacity and slender structural design. In addition, Brüninghoff is manufacturing the corresponding steel connectors and joints. The company group is also producing glued laminated timber beams that form part of the floor construction.

A particular logistical challenge is the delivery via sea freight containers from Rotterdam, followed by onward transport by truck to Toronto. As there are currently no companies in Canada that manufacture according to the CREE Buildings standard, the client deliberately chose Brüninghoff as an experienced partner from Europe. With this project, Brüninghoff is not only setting new benchmarks in international timber construction, but also supporting the development of local manufacturing capacities in North America. In doing so, the company group actively contributes to the establishment of modern, sustainable construction methods in the North American market and strengthens its position as an innovation leader in timber construction.
